General Music

Our K-6 General Music class brings music to life through purposeful hands-on experiences that keep students actively involved. From singing and movement to instruments and creative exploration, every lesson is designed to build a strong musical foundation while keeping students engaged and curious. Each class blends energy with structure, giving students opportunities to collaborate and create, while building confidence, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of God’s gift of music to us. Whether your child already loves music or is just beginning their journey, this class nurtures curiosity and helps every student find their unique voice in a fun and supportive environment.

K-1

Discover the joy of music through play-based, hands-on exploration! In this class students will build their understanding of fundamental musical concepts through singing, moving, playing instruments, and creative discovery, all while experiencing a joyful musical community and building their confidence and creativity!

9:00-10:00 AM

2-3

In this class students will develop essential musical skills in an energetic, interactive environment through singing, playing instruments, creative challenges, and engaging, cooperative activities. Students will also strengthen focus and confidence, experience a joyful musical community, and develop overall musicianship. Come join the fun! 

10:15-11:15 AM

4-6

Through dynamic project based learning, engaging music history experiences, and hands-on music making, 4th-6th grade students will explore the many ways music can be understood and applied in order to enrich their lives and captivate their curiosity. Students will build their musical understanding and bring it to life through creative projects, all while sharpening their problem-solving abilities, collaborating with peers, and developing confident, well-rounded musicianship.

Meet the Teacher

Kristen Toll

Kristen Toll has been active in music education in Manhattan KS since beginning her teaching career in 2015. Her varying experiences include teaching elementary music at Bluemont Elementary in USD383, where she was nominated as her school’s Teacher of the Year in 2021. She currently runs a cello studio and conducts the Silver Orchestra, an ensemble within the Manhattan Youth Symphony, and has been an invited clinician for orchestra festivals across the state. As a cellist herself, Kristen enjoys performing whenever possible. She currently serves as principal cellist of the Manhattan Symphony Orchestra, and has also previously served as assistant principal cellist in the Salina Symphony. Kristen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in Special Music Education from Wichita State University. Additionally, she has earned her full certification in the Kodaly Teaching Philosophy, as well as partial Suzuki Teacher Certification. Kristen loves teaching students in myriad musical capacities. She believes that music is a powerful and fascinating gift from God, and deeply enjoys every opportunity to help make music accessible and enjoyable for all students.
